Bohemian Rhapsody - Review

So, it is no secret that I am a Queen fan and when I heard that the movie is going to release two weeks late in India, I was deeply saddened by the news. Now that it’s finally out, I watched it as soon as I could and I am here to tell you what I thought of it!

PLOT:
Bohemian Rhapsody tells the story of Freddie Mercury, the popular rock star and leader of the popular 80’s band Queen after he meets his bandmates, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, and their rise to fame.

REVIEW:
Well, Bohemian Rhapsody was a movie I was looking forward to for a very long time and now that it’s here, I have a few things to say. For starters, hats off to Dexter Fletcher. At no given point of time does the movie feel like a product of two visions (he replaced Bryan Singer, who retained directing credit when the making of the movie was almost complete). Rami, Ben, Gwilym, and Joe have all played the members of the band in a beautiful manner. Not only they, but the other cast, like Allen Leech, Lucy Boynton and many, many more had absolutely stellar performances as well.

The movie gives off a bit of a karaoke feel, with on-screen lyrics of the songs in the movie (hey, I’m not complaining) which is a great thing. The movie is brilliant in its portrayal of the band and how it started off. There are pieces of comedy and drama, laughter and crying, all very brilliantly tied in together under one roof. In all honesty, I was sobbing throughout the last 30 minutes of the film.

That being said, unfortunately, the movie does have some drawbacks. I felt that the movie was very poorly timed. What I mean is that the first half of the movie is funny and charming, and it focuses on the band as a whole and what the band’s roots are. However, the second half of the film succumbs to the clichéd rock star movie tropes and often comes off as erratic.

The movie relies heavily on Freddie for the entire second half, and I feel that is unfair to many of the other actors who had very stunning performances. Also, the movie feels rushed and does not really delve deeper into any of the other cast and crew’s backstory and hence, it comes off as lackluster and unemotional at certain points where it should have been the exact opposite. What I’m trying to say is that the movie does not build connections with other characters well enough to actually feel for them. People who are not Queen fans may not even care about any of the other characters in the film.
All in all, it is an enjoyable movie for a Queen fan, and if someone who is not a Queen fan watches the movie, they are sure to become one after this.


I give this movie a 3/5.

    Very astute review of the movie Varun. I agree with you completely. It is a moving tale of Freddie Mercury, the legend and his band Queen. As good as the movie is, I still hold the makers of the movie responsible for not focusing even a little bit about other band members.
    You my friend have written a very honest and a heartfelt review. I am loving it.

    Loved it too, but yeah, the movie doesn't give the rest of the band much credit. In fact I felt as if people who aren't Queen fans won't even remember the names of anyone apart from Freddie...

Wonder Woman 84 - Spoiler Free Review

 Hey guys! So... I haven't done one of these in a while huh. Well, I just saw Wonder Woman 84 and it's the only superhero blockbuster comic book movie I have seen all year... quite literally. So given that, it's probably the best movie in that genre I saw all year.
